I spent the entire day shadowing this herd of tule elk through thick coastal fog and relentless wind. The bulls were fired up—bugling nonstop—but the light never came. Hour after hour, I followed them across the ridges, soaked in the gray of a moody, unforgiving day.
Then, just as the sun began to fall, the clouds cracked open. In the final light of day, it happened—two bulls locked in a slow standoff, surrounded by their cows, bathed in golden light with the Pacific as their backdrop.
I’ve always loved the elk that call the ocean’s edge home, but I never thought I’d capture a moment like this. One of those scenes that felt too perfect to be real—earned after a long, quiet grind in the coastal wild.
