THe Story

Off the coast of Oregon, where the rainforest crashes into the Pacific, Roosevelt elk emerge from their deep, shadowy hideouts to feed in the windswept dunes. These elk are ghosts—black-horned, elusive, and almost mythical in the way they vanish into the trees.

I spent two full days shadowing a herd through the ever-shifting dune grass, waiting for the right moment. The bull led his cows with silent confidence, his dark antlers cutting through the coastal mist like driftwood in the surf. Finally, the moment came—a perfect frame of wildness and beauty. To walk with these giants, to watch them live and move in such a raw and rugged place, was nothing short of surreal.
